DHX Media – Vancouver is looking for an experienced Special Pose Unit (SPU) Supervisor to join our team!

The Special Pose Unit is a unique team where artists are responsible for improving the acting in scenes by hand drawing strong, dynamic character poses that would be difficult to accomplish by simply manipulating a character build. Sitting somewhere between animation and design, this team is set to push the boundaries of character animation past the limitations of software.

As a Special Pose Unit Supervisor, you’ll be the fearless leader of this exceptional and talented team, and work closely with the Animation Director to ensure the quality of work meets the standards of this epic new show!


  • Be a leader and mentor to a team of 5 Special Pose Artists; provide guidance, feedback, information and ideas
  • Report directly to the Animation Director
  • Evaluate the continuity and flow of all episodes and ensure that the expected quality of the poses is met
  • Communicate required revisions to in-house team of Special Pose Artists
  • Guide and assist the Special Pose Artists to create strong character drawings that push expression, pose or perspective
  • Work with the Special Pose Artists to improve actingand attitude in scenes where the storyboard drawings don’t fully support or do justice to the recorded dialogue
  • Help your team establish poses that will be reused, whether throughout a sequence, episode or season
  • Meet production milestones and deadlines and motivate your team to do the same
  • Other projects and tasks as required


  • 2+ years’ experience as an Art Director, Lead Character Designer / Illustrator or Animation Supervisor
  • 4-6 years’ experience designing or animating for a 2D television series
  • Ability to motivate, mentor and coach a talented and diverse team
  • High level of drawing skills based on realistic human anatomy, faces and hands
  • Ability to put characters on model
  • Adaptability to a graphic style
  • Very strong sense of acting, staging and posing
  • Drive, determination, creative problem-solving skills and a keen eye for detail
  • Effective and professional communication skills.
  • Strong ability to organize and prioritize
  • Degree/Diploma from a recognized animation school preferred
  • Knowledge of Flash is a definite asset (we’re willing to train strong artists)
