Studio Technician 3, 3D Animation

Pay Grade I ($26.70 to $28.59 per hour)

Applications are invited for a Studio Technician to provide technical support for the delivery of curriculum and assist students in developing and articulating technical skills in 3D Computer Animation. Demonstrates to students the safe and appropriate use and application of equipment, tools, materials, techniques and processes. Advises students in solving technical problems. Maintains area studios, computer work spaces, tools and equipment for curriculum needs. Monitors media equipment and computer use, booking systems and system accounts. Monitors budgets, maintains and orders supplies, and updates records for the work area. Works as part of a team with area technicians and faculty to recommend capital purchases, renovations and policies. Researches new equipment, products, materials and processes. Provides technical input into curriculum development as required. Participates in the planning and production of the graduation exhibition. Hires, trains, supervises and organizes the work for student monitors and junior staff. Oversees the general security and safety of the area. Participates as a member of various committees. Applicants will have:

  • University degree or diploma in an Animation Program.
  • A least three years of direct experience in a comparable technical position in a post-secondary institution OR an equivalent level of education and/or experience.
  • Considerable practical working experience with a broad range of software, tools and techniques related to 3D

    computer animation production and composing.

  • Experience working with scripting in the use of animation software, character rigging, lighting and rendering, and game engines is an asset
  • Previous job experience working in the animation, visual effects or gaming industry is an asset.
  • Considerable knowledge and working experience with production pipelines for 2D and 3D animation.
  • Considerable knowledge and working experience with industry 2D and 3D software such as Maya, Zbrush,

    Houdini, Harmony and TV Paint.

  • Considerable knowledge of Windows Operating System, hardware and peripherals.
  • Sound knowledge of editing and compositing software such as Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Nuke.
  • Related knowledge of network rendering software such as Qube or Back-burner.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to non-technical users and effectively maintain rapport with students, faculty, staff and other facilities users.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and well-developed organizational and administrative skills.
  • Sound knowledge and experience working with budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish good working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within policies and guidelines and to effectively liaise between Technical Services staff, management and faculty.

 

  • Ability to work at 4-meter heights and ability to lift 10kg.

Some Typical Duties:

 

1. Under the general supervision of the Manager of Media Services, provides technical support to the area and assists students to develop and articulate technical skills in support of the Animation curriculum.

2. Provides original technical instruction and demonstration to classes and individual students on the various software tools and processes of animation production. Works with faculty and other media technicians to research, test, create, plan, prepare and deliver workshops in support of curriculum. Demonstrates the appropriate use of equipment and tools, with particular emphasis on ergonomics and safety. Prepares technical notes for demonstrated procedures and administers tests to users.

3.Coordinates with faculty to prepare studio, equipment and materials for classes. Ensures security, safety, effectiveness and cleanliness of the area’s computer work spaces and studio spaces.

4. Troubleshoots, diagnoses issues, and performs minor repairs on area production and computer equipment. May arrange for external repairs. Develops and implements computer software and hardware maintenance schedule that includes remote desktop workstation managing. Consults with, and may arrange support and repairs with, ITS staff to resolve networking, hardware or software related issues, and package-based updates as necessary. Works as a team with area technicians and ITS technicians to install/configure new computers and application software, network-based solutions, peripheral equipment and related items in program area.

5.Works as part of a team with area technicians in creating reference material, technical information, and other instructional and departmental documents in both print and electronic formats, ensuring information is up to date.

6. Works as part of a team with the area technicians maintaining program area resource booking system to provide equitable student access to equipment. Distributes equipment loans to students. May work with AV staff to oversee equipment bookings through the AV department.
