Job Purpose

The CG Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the CG projects in the studio. They will be responsible for ensuring that the 3D departments deliver on time and at the highest quality.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work directly with leadership team and other departmental supervisors to determine and advise technical solutions
  • Complete high-quality work, on time and to specification
  • Assist with scheduling and ensure timely delivery of production department assignments
  • Collaborate with other department managers on dailies, workflow and pipeline strategies, providing ongoing improvement to processes and methodology
  • Responsible for workflow, organization, shot continuity and quality control
  • Spot check individual work of artists and evaluate quality and efficiency
  • Mentor team members and conduct performance evaluations
  • Assess quality, problem solve and escalate as needed
  • Serve as key technical expert on projects as well as facility 
  • Supervise 3D and/or 2D imagery and animated content for feature film and television series projects
  • Drive creative concepts with the rest of the technical/creative/IT/management teams through strong communication, leadership planning, concepts/sketches, etc.
  • Assist in the bidding process by breaking-down and quoting on complex projects
  • Attend client meetings from initial pitches and concepts, through to project completion
  • Establish the technical direction and technical foundation to meet artistic, budget and schedule parameters
  • Collaborate with directors, pipeline supervisor, team leads and other key members of the leadership team to develop, enhance and maintain a strong and flexible CG pipeline
  • Facilitate and maintain open communication with production managers and directors
  • Facilitate and develop consensus between technology, artists and production
  • Identify, research, recommend and implement new techniques into studio tools
  • Help oversee render and storage requirements for assigned projects
  • Find a balance between creative needs and technical resources available
  • Actively participate in production-related meetings by offering thoughts and ideas
  • Anticipate, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from key stakeholders
  • Recommend any crew training needs to studio
  • Recruit candidates for key positions in collaboration with the production team
  • Train the team on an ongoing basis both technically and creatively
  • Oversee daily activities of the team and communicate expectations, while balancing creative desires with the requirements of production
  • Foster and enable communication and collaboration across departments
  • Foresee potential issues that may affect delivery and find solutions
  • Lead brainstorming in ways to make production and tools more efficient
  • Provide general technical support to Artists and Technical Directors
  • Learn current pipeline and work within the confines of the existing technology while keeping an eye on emerging technologies
  • Maintain/enhance scripts for checking and publishing of assets

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum 10 years experience in the production of high-end 3D projects for Features and Television
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field or equivalent required
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, within the production team and with Producers, Director and clients
  • Expert knowledge of advanced 3D modelling, rendering, animation, texturing, lighting, shading, effects, compositing and rigging
  • Expert level Maya and Arnold knowledge
  • Expert level Nuke knowledge and general compositing principles
  • Expert level understanding of modern colour workflows and ability to apply these effectively to meet current and future broadcasting standards
  • Houdini FX and simulation experience
  • Advanced rendering knowledge with a clean, modern aesthetic matching or exceeding industry standards
  • Familiarity with all pipeline issues in a typical post production environment
  • A knack for visual exploration of abstract concepts and translating colour concepts through digital 3D/2D pipelines
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and adapt to ever-changing production requests
  • Ability to oversee more than one production at a time, with skills for managing overlapping and sometimes vastly different productions (2D/3D/Hybrid/etc)
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and follow through in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
  • A team-work oriented mentality with a friendly, positive and professional attitude.

  • Experience in leading, mentoring and training large teams
  • Exceptional organizational skills; understands how to prioritize the necessary tasks and assignments
  • Ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas clearly, verbally and in written form
  • Well rounded working knowledge of the technical and artistic aspects of live action and visual effects, as well as a deep understanding of CG pipelines
  • Ability to take direction positively, work well within a team and thrive under the pressure of tight deadlines
