322211. Guru studio seeks a Background Designer for their brand new original show Justin Time.

Justin Time is a “2d/3d Hybrid” production with a unique look. Visually, it pulls design influences from the likes of Mary Blair, Golden Book Illustrations and Samurai Jack. The Character designs are bright, colourful and highly refined using simple graphic shapes. Environments are rich and highly stylized with a blend of graphic shapes and painterly textures. The Animation style is energetic and playful and the direction of the show will make use of creative camera compositions and movement.

Responsibilities:
Work with Senior Designer and Production Designer to illustrate backgrounds and assets to match the style of show.
Produce prop, set and background designs in various forms from rough concept to detailed production ready art.
Take on various concept art tasks other than background design (character concept art, cover art, mock-ups etc.)

Job Requirements
Excellent drawing and painting skills and sense of colour.
A solid understanding on how to arrive at a stylized “cartoon” look and how it relates to three dimensional space.
Art school Diploma.
Experience with Photoshop and Illustrator – knowledge of other art/graphics software an asset.
It is necessary for every applicant to provide a portfolio in digital format.
Previous experience an asset.
Works well under pressure in a small studio environment.

Produce character designs in various forms from rough concept to detailed turnarounds.
Produce character art including emotions and simple animations using Photoshop and Illustrator.
Take on various concept art tasks other than character design (Character concept art, cover art, mock-ups etc.).

Job Requirements:
Excellent drawing and animation skills.
Have an intuitive sense of what makes a character appealing and appropriate for the needs of the design.
A solid understanding on how to arrive at a stylized “cartoon” look and how it relates to three dimensional space.
Art school Diploma.
Experience with Photoshop and Illustrator – knowledge of other art/graphics software an asset.

It is necessary for every applicant to provide a portfolio in digital format.

Understanding of 3D animation an asset but not a must.

Previous experience an asset.

Responsibilities
Collaborate with production Designer and design team to develop a consistent look for the show
Contribute substantially and decisively to the evolution of the show design
Conceptualize, create and maintain detailed design documentation throughout the project cycle.
Evolve ideas in conjunction with a team and assign work to your design team
Assist design colleagues to bring the project in as planned.
Mentor design colleagues and level artists. Provide guidance, feedback, or instruction to those individuals that enhance their work. This includes reviewing scripts/storyboard etc.
Demonstrate commitment to creative collaboration in a time-sensitive environment.

Requirements
Candidate needs to be flexible and able to design backgrounds, props, character, wardrobe, etc both conceptual and production ready art.
A solid understanding on how to arrive at a stylized “cartoon” look and how it relates to three dimensional space.
Art school Diploma.
Experience with Photoshop and Illustrator, knowledge of other art/graphics software an asset.
Experience with pixel-art and image optimization.
3D knowledge an asset.
Excellent creativity and demonstrated ability to generate innovative concepts and ideas.
Superior communication skills.
A thorough understanding of major elements of show design including, story, dialog, interface, character interaction, mission/environment design, look and feel.
Ability to productively discuss, make decisions, and communicate ideas in a wide variety of aesthetic areas (backgrounds, characters, wardrobe, props etc.).
Recognized by leads and amongst peers as highly skilled and a top contributor.
Previous show experience a must.

Position Requirements:
Strong layout and design skills.
Solid knowledge of story, including language, acting and craft.
Must be highly creative with the ability to work within tight deadlines.
Must have a passion for sketching, conceptualizing and developing characters.
Superior ability to understand the nature of the medium and to provide realistic solutions to planning an efficient production.
Must have a strong portfolio.
Minimum of 2 years experienced is required.
Digital preferred.
