events: Cartoon Connection Canada-EU, October 18-21, Ottawa

I got a tip a few weeks back about the possibility of an event happening in conjunction with the Ottawa International Animation Festival’s Television Animation Conference and the European organization, CARTOON (European Association of Animation Film).  Details have been released on the Cartoon website, and this sounds like a must for animation producers looking to do business with our European counterparts.

Here’s the description:

CARTOON CONNECTION CANADA-EU

18-21 October 2010, Ottawa, Canada

What?
Within the framework of MEDIA International, a new programme of the European Union, CARTOON is organising a meeting between European and Canadian animation professionals.

The purpose is to expand the professional network of both sides and to start/amplify some cooperation between Europe and Canada in the animation business at large, be it for services, distribution of features or TV series, co-productions…

How?
The meeting will be divided into 2 parts:
– Information sessions on the distinctive markets to understand how each of them works, to analyze the reality and the difficulties to co-produce with Canada with case studies
– One-to-one meetings (10 minutes for each meeting) to get to know each other, present new projects or existing series and/or films, and discover projects from the other country.

Where?
The meeting will take place in Ottawa (Canada), in the 5-star hotel “Fairmont Château Laurier”.

When?
Cartoon Connection will start 2 days before the Ottawa International Animation Festival with a Welcome Dinner on Monday 18 October, followed by 2 full session days (Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20) and a final morning (Thursday 21) for further meetings (after previous one-to-one meetings).

The Animation Festival of Ottawa will take place from Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24 October. During the Festival and following Cartoon Connection, our Canadian partner organizes the TAC event (Television Animation Conference) where they invite also US speakers and buyers. Participants will have the opportunity to extend their stay and attend the TAC. More information here.

Cartoon Connection is a series of events intended to initiate and establish lasting professional relationships between European producers / distributors and their counterparts based in other continents. The first events of the kind took place in Argentina (Buenos Aires) in November 2009 and South Korea (Jeju Island) in March 2010. The event in Ottawa will be the third of its type.  It seems to be basically a huge European delegation on an outreach mission, structured as a conference.  Here’s a little more description from the website:

The 3-day meeting will alternate formal speaker’s presentations, panel sessions during round tables and project presentations.

The programme content will offer attending animation professionals practical tools to work together with particular focus on financing, distribution and co-productions.

The ultimate aim of CARTOON CONNECTION is to increase knowledge of the different markets, promotion, networking and distribution of animation works for both European and international professionals and to facilitate cooperation between Europe and the different continents in the field of animation.
