Children, Youth & Media conference: A look at the program, November 15 to 17

Once again this fall, Youth Media Alliance (YMA) presents a major event for youth screen-based media professionals: the Children, Youth & Media (CYM) conference, now in its seventh edition. Scheduled from November 15 to 17 in Toronto, the conference addresses the pressing issues and key concerns of youth media production today. This year’s event will be hosted by a major partner: Corus Entertainment.

On the theme of “Survival of the Fittest,” CYM 2017 offers three days of talks, panels, workshops and exchanges with industry professionals on a host of pivotal topics. Discoverability will be addressed by Carlos Pancheo, VP of audience development at Boat Rocker, who will present his strategy for expanding his audience worldwide through social media, and Laura Clunie, VP of entertainment at Spin Master, who will reveal how she propelled PAW Patrol to the top of the ratings. Relations with China will be analyzed by Natalie Osborne, chief strategy officer at 9 Story Media Group, and Jacqueline Vong, licensing director at Fun to Play Toys. Shaftesbury CEO Christina Jennings will use her series Emerald Code as a case study on how to launch a series without a distributor by seeking other forms of financing. Productions that focus on bold subject matter will also be in the spotlight. Grainne McGuinness, creative director at Paper Owl Films, will discuss Pablo, a television series with an all-autistic core cast as well as autistic researchers and screenwriters. She’ll be joined by Chantal Lafleur, president of Productions Avenida, who will discuss Jenny, about a teenaged girl with leukemia. Marie McCann, senior director at CBC Kids, will lead a panel on formats to prioritize based on type of content. On November 16, Relish Interactive will host a workshop on interactive content. Last but not least, the event will wrap on November 17 with a session on best practices by the YouTube team.
